NOTAM Services

NOTAM Services

NOTAMs are the aviation world’s way of communicating temporary changes, hazards, and restrictions—and they’re critical for safe flight operations. But raw NOTAM data is notoriously difficult to parse, filled with abbreviations, codes, and formatting that makes finding relevant information challenging. CaptainVFR transforms NOTAM chaos into clear, actionable intelligence.

Instead of wading through hundreds of irrelevant NOTAMs to find the few that matter for your flight, CaptainVFR automatically filters, decodes, and presents only the NOTAMs relevant to your route, your altitude, and your timeframe. See NOTAMs on the map, get plain-language explanations, and receive alerts when new NOTAMs affect your planned flight.

Comprehensive NOTAM Coverage

Access NOTAMs from official sources with automatic filtering and intelligent presentation

Worldwide NOTAM Access
CaptainVFR retrieves NOTAMs directly from official aviation authorities worldwide—FAA in the United States, EUROCONTROL in Europe, and national authorities globally. Real-time updates ensure you always have the latest information, with automatic refresh every 15 minutes when connected. Historical NOTAMs remain accessible for reference, and the system tracks NOTAM amendments and cancellations automatically. Coverage includes airport NOTAMs, FIR NOTAMs, and area NOTAMs for complete situational awareness.
Intelligent Filtering
Not all NOTAMs are relevant to your flight. CaptainVFR's intelligent filtering system analyzes each NOTAM and shows only those that matter. Filter by altitude—see only NOTAMs affecting your planned flight level. Filter by time—hide NOTAMs that aren't active during your flight. Filter by category—focus on runway closures and ignore taxiway lighting. Filter by relevance—VFR pilots don't need IFR procedure NOTAMs. The result is a focused list of actionable information instead of overwhelming data dumps.

Plain Language Decoding

NOTAM format was designed for teletype machines in the 1940s, and it shows. Cryptic abbreviations like “RWY 09/27 CLSD” or “OBST CRANE 1200FT AMSL 0.5NM N OF ARP” require mental translation. CaptainVFR automatically decodes NOTAM text into plain English: “Runway 09/27 is closed” and “Obstacle: Crane at 1,200 feet above sea level, 0.5 nautical miles north of airport reference point.”

The system maintains both the original NOTAM text (for official reference) and the decoded version (for quick understanding). Color coding highlights critical information—runway closures in red, navigation aid outages in yellow, informational NOTAMs in blue. Key details like effective times, affected facilities, and geographic areas are extracted and displayed prominently.

Route-Integrated NOTAM Analysis

See NOTAMs in the context of your actual flight plan, not as abstract data

NOTAMs on the Map
Visual display of NOTAM locations directly on the moving map. Runway closures appear at the affected airport, TFRs show as shaded areas, obstacle NOTAMs display at their geographic location. Tap any NOTAM marker for full details. The map view makes it instantly obvious which NOTAMs affect your route and which are far from your flight path. Color-coded markers indicate NOTAM severity and type.
Automatic Route Analysis
When you create a flight plan, CaptainVFR automatically retrieves and analyzes NOTAMs along your entire route. The system identifies NOTAMs at your departure airport, destination airport, alternate airports, and all airports within 25 nautical miles of your route. En-route NOTAMs affecting your planned altitude and timeframe are highlighted. The route briefing includes a NOTAM summary showing critical items that require attention.
Smart NOTAM Alerts
Get notified when new NOTAMs affect your planned flights. The system monitors NOTAMs for saved flight plans and sends push notifications when relevant NOTAMs are issued. Critical NOTAMs—runway closures, TFRs along your route, navigation aid outages—trigger immediate alerts. Less critical NOTAMs are batched into periodic summaries. Configure alert preferences to match your needs and avoid notification fatigue.

Temporary Flight Restrictions (TFRs)

TFRs are among the most critical NOTAMs because violating them can result in serious consequences—from certificate action to military intercept. CaptainVFR gives TFRs special treatment with prominent display, clear boundaries, and proactive warnings.

TFRs appear as shaded areas on the map with clear boundaries and altitude limits. The system categorizes TFRs by type—presidential TFRs, stadium TFRs, disaster TFRs, space operations, firefighting operations—and displays appropriate warnings. When you plan a route that penetrates a TFR, the system alerts you immediately and suggests route modifications to avoid the restricted area.

For stadium TFRs (which activate only during events), the system shows both the TFR boundary and the activation schedule. You can see at a glance whether the TFR will be active during your planned flight time. For moving TFRs (like presidential movements), the system updates the TFR location as new NOTAMs are issued.

NOTAM Categories & Organization

Organized presentation of different NOTAM types for quick assessment

Airport & Runway NOTAMs
Runway closures, taxiway restrictions, lighting outages, and airport facility changes. These NOTAMs directly affect your ability to land at an airport and are highlighted prominently. The system shows which runways are available, what restrictions apply, and whether the airport is usable for your operation. Temporary tower closures, frequency changes, and service limitations are clearly indicated.
Navigation & Communication NOTAMs
VOR outages, NDB decommissioning, GPS interference, and frequency changes. For VFR pilots using radio navigation, these NOTAMs indicate which navaids are available and which are out of service. Communication NOTAMs show frequency changes, ATIS outages, and radio service limitations. The system cross-references navigation NOTAMs with your flight plan to identify if any planned navaids are unavailable.
Obstacle & Hazard NOTAMs
New obstacles, crane operations, aerial activities, and other hazards to flight. These NOTAMs warn of temporary obstacles like construction cranes, tethered balloons, or aerial survey operations. The system displays obstacle locations on the map with height information and effective times. Parachute jumping, aerial demonstrations, and other special activities are clearly indicated with affected areas and altitudes.
Airspace & Restriction NOTAMs
Temporary airspace restrictions, military operations, special use airspace activations, and airspace changes. These NOTAMs indicate when restricted areas, MOAs, or warning areas are active. The system shows activation schedules and helps you plan around active restricted airspace. Temporary airspace changes, like temporary control zones or altitude restrictions, are clearly displayed.

Pre-Flight NOTAM Briefing

Before every flight, you need a comprehensive NOTAM briefing. CaptainVFR generates a complete briefing package that includes all relevant NOTAMs organized logically for easy review. The briefing starts with critical NOTAMs that require immediate attention, followed by important NOTAMs that affect your flight, and finally informational NOTAMs for awareness.

The briefing can be organized chronologically (by effective time), geographically (by location along your route), or by priority (most critical first). Export the briefing as a PDF for printing or email, or save it to your flight records for documentation. The briefing includes a summary page highlighting the most important items and a detailed section with complete NOTAM text.

International NOTAM Support

NOTAM formats vary by country, with different abbreviations, structures, and conventions. CaptainVFR handles international NOTAM formats automatically, decoding NOTAMs according to local conventions and presenting them in consistent format regardless of origin. The system supports ICAO NOTAM format, US domestic format, and regional variations.

For international flights, the system retrieves NOTAMs from all countries along your route and presents them in a unified view. Language translation is available for NOTAMs issued in non-English languages, with both original and translated text displayed. Country-specific NOTAM categories and requirements are handled automatically.

CaptainVFR’s NOTAM services transform one of aviation’s most challenging information sources into clear, actionable intelligence. By filtering irrelevant NOTAMs, decoding cryptic abbreviations, displaying information visually, and providing proactive alerts, the system ensures you’re always aware of temporary changes and restrictions that affect your flight—without the information overload that makes traditional NOTAM briefings so challenging.
