Flight Tracking & Logging

Flight Tracking & Logging

Every flight tells a story—where you went, how you got there, what conditions you encountered, and how you performed. CaptainVFR’s flight tracking system records that story automatically, creating detailed GPS tracks, performance data, and flight logs that help you analyze your flying, maintain accurate records, and continuously improve your skills.

From the moment you start moving until you shut down, CaptainVFR records your position, altitude, speed, and heading with precision GPS tracking. The result is a complete record of every flight—a breadcrumb trail showing your exact path, altitude profiles revealing your climb and descent performance, and comprehensive statistics documenting your flying. This data flows seamlessly into your digital logbook, transforming raw GPS tracks into official logbook entries with minimal effort.

Comprehensive Flight Recording

Automatic, high-precision recording of every aspect of your flight

High-Precision GPS Tracking
CaptainVFR records your position every second using your device's GPS, creating a detailed breadcrumb trail of your entire flight. The system captures latitude, longitude, altitude (both GPS and barometric when available), ground speed, heading, and track. Recording starts automatically when you begin moving and stops when you shut down, requiring no manual intervention. The high-frequency recording captures every turn, every altitude change, and every maneuver with precision suitable for detailed flight analysis.
Real-Time Flight Data
During flight, watch your track build in real-time on the moving map. See your ground speed, altitude, heading, and vertical speed updated continuously. The system calculates distance flown, time en route, and fuel consumed based on your aircraft profile. Real-time statistics help you monitor performance and make informed decisions during flight. All data is recorded locally, so tracking works even without cellular connectivity—perfect for flights in remote areas.
Altitude & Performance Profiles
Beyond simple position tracking, CaptainVFR records detailed altitude profiles showing your climb, cruise, and descent performance. See your climb rate in feet per minute, cruise altitude stability, and descent profile. The system identifies takeoff and landing automatically, calculates pattern altitude for touch-and-goes, and tracks altitude deviations. Barometric altitude (when available) provides more accurate altitude data than GPS alone, and the system seamlessly blends both sources for optimal accuracy.
Environmental Data Recording
Flight tracking includes environmental data that affects performance and provides context for analysis. The system records outside air temperature (when available from weather data), barometric pressure, GPS accuracy and satellite count, and device battery consumption during flight. This environmental data helps explain performance variations and provides valuable context when reviewing flights later. Temperature and pressure data enable accurate density altitude calculations for performance analysis.

Visual Flight Review & Analysis

The real value of flight tracking emerges when you review your flights after landing. CaptainVFR’s flight review tools transform raw GPS data into visual, interactive analysis that helps you understand your performance and identify areas for improvement.

The map replay feature lets you watch your flight unfold on the map, with a moving aircraft icon following your exact path. Scrub through the timeline to jump to any point in the flight, or play it back at various speeds. The altitude chart displays your altitude profile graphically, making it easy to see climb performance, altitude maintenance during cruise, and descent profiles. Speed charts show ground speed variations throughout the flight, revealing where you encountered headwinds or tailwinds.

For training flights, the review tools are invaluable. See exactly where you entered the pattern, how your pattern legs looked from above, and where you turned base and final. Analyze steep turns to see if you maintained altitude and completed perfect 360-degree circles. Review cross-country navigation to see how accurately you tracked your planned course. The visual feedback accelerates learning and helps you refine your technique.

Comprehensive Flight Statistics

Detailed metrics and analysis for every flight you record

Distance & Time
Total distance flown in nautical miles, statute miles, or kilometers. Flight duration from takeoff to landing. Block time from engine start to shutdown. Hobbs time equivalent for accurate aircraft billing. Average ground speed for the entire flight. Maximum ground speed achieved. Time spent in different flight phases—climb, cruise, descent, pattern work.
Altitude Performance
Maximum altitude reached during flight. Minimum altitude (excluding takeoff and landing). Average cruise altitude. Total altitude gained and lost. Average climb rate in feet per minute. Maximum climb rate achieved. Average descent rate. Time spent at different altitude bands for airspace analysis.
Speed & Efficiency
Average ground speed throughout flight. Maximum ground speed achieved. Average true airspeed (calculated from ground speed and wind). Fuel efficiency in nautical miles per gallon. Estimated fuel consumed based on aircraft profile. Range achieved on available fuel. Comparison of actual vs. planned performance.

Seamless Logbook Integration

Flight tracking and logbook keeping are naturally connected, and CaptainVFR makes the connection seamless. Every recorded flight can be converted to a logbook entry with a single tap, automatically filling in departure and arrival airports, flight times, route flown, and conditions encountered.

The system uses GPS data to determine departure and arrival airports automatically, identifies day vs. night flight time based on official sunset/sunrise times, calculates cross-country time based on distance flown, and determines dual vs. solo time based on your settings. You add the details that GPS can’t capture—pilot in command time, instructor name, maneuvers practiced, and personal notes—and the logbook entry is complete.

For pilots building hours toward ratings or maintaining currency, this integration is transformative. No more reconstructing flights from memory or estimating times. Every flight is documented accurately with precise times, exact routes, and complete details. Your logbook becomes a true record of your flying, not an approximation.

Advanced Tracking Features

Sophisticated capabilities for detailed flight analysis and record-keeping

Vibration Monitoring
CaptainVFR can record accelerometer and gyroscope data during flight, capturing aircraft vibrations and movements. This vibration data helps identify unusual vibration patterns that might indicate mechanical issues, track changes in vibration over time as engines age, and detect anomalies that warrant maintenance attention. While not a replacement for proper maintenance, vibration monitoring provides early warning of developing problems and helps you maintain your aircraft proactively.
Flight Sharing & Collaboration
Share your flights with instructors, fellow pilots, or friends. Generate shareable links that display your flight track on an interactive map. Control whether shared flights are view-only or downloadable. Flight instructors can review student flights remotely, providing feedback on navigation accuracy, altitude control, and pattern work. Share memorable flights on social media or with non-pilot friends to show them what you do. All sharing respects your privacy settings and can be revoked at any time.

Pattern Work Analysis

For pilots practicing takeoffs and landings, CaptainVFR’s pattern work analysis provides detailed feedback on your pattern flying. The system automatically detects touch-and-goes and stop-and-goes, identifies pattern legs (crosswind, downwind, base, final), and analyzes your pattern geometry.

See if your downwind leg was parallel to the runway, whether you turned base at the right point, and how your final approach looked. The system measures pattern altitude consistency, identifies altitude deviations, and shows where you were high or low. For student pilots and pilots working on proficiency, this objective feedback is invaluable for improving pattern work.

Data Management & Privacy

Your flight data is yours, and CaptainVFR gives you complete control. All flights are stored locally on your device and optionally synced to the cloud for backup and cross-device access. You control what syncs and what stays local. Delete any flight permanently if desired, or archive old flights to free up space while maintaining records.

Export flights in standard formats—GPX for use in other aviation apps, KML for Google Earth, CSV for spreadsheet analysis, or PDF for printable flight reports. The export includes all recorded data—position, altitude, speed, and statistics. This data portability ensures you’re never locked into a single platform and can use your flight data however you choose.

For privacy, you can enable anonymous mode that records flights without uploading to cloud services, obscure exact departure and arrival locations if desired, and control who can see your flights and flight statistics. Your flying is your business, and CaptainVFR respects that.

CaptainVFR’s flight tracking and logging system transforms every flight into a learning opportunity and a permanent record. From student pilots building experience to professional pilots maintaining detailed records, from weekend warriors tracking their adventures to serious aviators analyzing performance, the system provides the tools needed to record, analyze, and learn from every flight. Automatic recording, detailed analysis, and seamless logbook integration make it effortless to maintain accurate records while gaining insights that make you a better pilot.
